Her name is on the lips of millions; people admire her, argue about her, criticise her, but no-one remains indifferent. The reason is simple. Her victory at the 49th Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul was as spectacular as it was unexpected. Ruslana soared to the music Olympus and her triumph will be remembered long afterwards. Last but not least, her triumph made the world remember both the singer that proved to be the only one of her kind and her country, Ukraine. Perhaps time will pass before we fully appreciate what this fragile expressive young lady has accomplished for all of us. Perhaps it was that long-awaited chance... Ruslana Lyzhichko is our guest this time.

The Ukrainian: Ruslana, when I made arrangements for this interview with your press secretary and assistant, I was amazed at your energy. It was as though your schedule were in terms of minutes, with all those concerts, meetings, trips to other countries. May I ask how many hours do you sleep a night?

Ruslana: Five hours. Oh, I know what others will say, that it’s bad for my health. Eight hours of sleep is a luxury I can’t afford, not now anyway.

The Ukr.: Does this hectic schedule have to do with the euphoria of the Eurovision victory, or is it simply your lifestyle?

R.: I’d say it’s the way I live. Sitting in a corner is dull. As for the euphoria, it began onstage and ended right there. It was onstage that I vented all my emotions and when I returned to the dressing room I found myself surprisingly calm. Even when it was time to walk back to receive the prize everybody was surprised to see that I was calm. Usually in these circumstances, hearing the deafening applause, people tend to become flustered, they turn either red or go pale. I remember thinking only oh well, here goes. It was as though I had foreseen the outcome and thought that I ought to prepare myself for the publicity, for getting in the limelight where lots of people would watch my every step onstage and in daily life.

The Ukr.: Indeed, people watching you on their TV screens weren’t likely to expect a singer with such skill and stage presence to feel ill at ease at her moment of glory. Not Ruslana!

R.: In fact, my calmness saved me. Imagine, once they’d announced the winner’s name the security guards formed a circle round me as all hell broke loose in the audience, with cameramen and journalists elbowing their way to take exclusive pictures and interviews. But for the guards, someone would’ve surely hit me on the head with a camera. Audio engineers were yelling hurry, put on the mike, get dressed and dash out onstage! They’d already announced Ukraine and still there was no one on the podium. That’s euphoria for you. That pandemonium was better than a cold shower. I saw my husband (and producer Aleksandr Ksenofontov - Auth.) only after an hour and could only embrace my mother even later, although she was with me in Istanbul.

The Ukr.: What did you tell yourself before the final performance?

R.: Believe it or not, I told myself here is your lucky chance. So many people are going to watch you, make them happier, even if only a little, so they can share your joy. I felt just great when walking out onstage.

The Ukr: And after the victory?

R.: I told myself don’t let this publicity carry you away. A true winner knows how to deal with victory, otherwise it will remain a chance happening. It must be a launch pad. You have to keep yourself under control, feel no fear, but keep working, choosing the right track. Well, we’ve chosen it. Concerts and cutting a new disc.

The Ukr.: We saw Eurovision only on our TV screens, so we can only guess what was happening backstage. Could you tell us?

R.: Eurovision isn’t an Oscar-winning event, of course. Here you won’t run into Leonardo DiCaprio or Richard Gere in the wings, if you know what I mean. Here each is there for themselves, minding their own business, getting prepared for the performance, keeping to their dressing room. Although we did break that unwritten law on one occasion. We heard a Turkish rock group strike up a fiery tune next door and it was very much like our Ukrainian kolomyika songs, so we started beating out the rythm on the wall and then dashed into their room. I grabbed a tambourine and we started playing and dancing. It was great, charging everybody with adrenalin. And they kept trying to match me up with the Greek singer Sakis Rouvas. He arrived like a real star and tried to act accordingly, but imagine him posing for 38 cameras and me suddenly bursting into the room and pulling off a stunt, making everybody laugh. He might have been seething inside, but he played along. It was then journalists started watching the two of us closely (did you see the way he looked at her and how she spoke to him?).

The Ukr.: You mean you were really having the time of your life, so that even the stage damaged during rehearsals didn’t dampen your spirit?

R.: Right, it was wild! Out of this world. Our dressing room was number one. Literally. All those walking past could read the notice, “Ukraine #1”. Journalists later said our press conferences were the merriest. We taught them to play our trembita [Ukr. version of a straight alpenhorn], sing our songs, drink vodka with salo. The atmosphere was that of constant motion, charged with energy. And yes, even the superhard glass stage couldn’t stand our wild dances. And you know what we did in the wings, before it was time for our number? Waltzing with each other to the songs being played onstage. The audio personnel were mad as hell, chasing us, trying to fix our mikes. We didn’t give a damn.

The Ukr.: You might disagree, but I have a feeling that your victory at the Eurovision Song Contest was calculated by your team with a mathematical precision. Russian journalists were surprised to see so many Ukrainian symbols in Istanbul.

R.: Small wonder, considering that we brought along 500 kilos of souvenirs: booklets about Ukraine, notebooks, ballpoint pens, T-shirts, bandanas, and presents for journalists. The Boeing flight could hardly take off. Mathematical precision? I still think it was more on the emotional side. Getting prepared for the contest, we heard so many recommendations, our heads were spinning, but we decided to be our usual selves. Last summer, Wild Dances, one of Ukraine’s most successful albums, was released. Unprecedentedly, it became Ukraine’s first licensed platinum disk. About 200,000 copies have been sold to date, all of them licensed! We chose a somewhat different path than our predecessors Volodymyr Ivasiuk and Sofia Rotaru, although we also proceeded from Carpathian folk tunes, but we kept the Carpathian rhythms, not songs. These rhythms, Hutsul dances, are quick and aggressive, more concordant with the modern times. Iryna Mazur, artistic director of the Zhyttia [Life] dance group, seems to know everything there is to know about dancing, so she staged an excellent number. Lviv designer Roksolana Bohutska is versed in the smallest nuances of Hutsul folk attire. In a word, we had a perfectly balanced professional team; otherwise, taking part in such a representative creative forum would make no sense.

The Ukr.: By the way, we know that you admonished Russian journalists to leave the young Julia Savicheva alone (her performance in Istanbul left much to be desired) and reminded them of the Ukrainian singer Oleksandr Ponomariov, placed only 14th in the previous contest.

R.: That’s right. During the last contest, journalists lashed out at Ponomariov and he didn’t deserve it. It’s clear now that we wouldn’t make it without Oleksandr and Olena Mozgova who were the trailblazers, going all the way, so following them was much easier. We are all grateful to them.

The Ukr.: Thanks to you, the 50th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Kyiv. Any special recommendations for the organizing committee?

R.: No politics, God forbid! The more so that we have presidential elections coming. Well, I think that our politicians wouldn’t gain much by pinning my name to their campaign. A candidate trying to capitalise on my victory in Istanbul will see his rating go down, I’m sure. If any of them had supported me prior, the situation could have been different.

The Ukr.: Premier Viktor Yanukovych has appointed you his advisor, and he is among the presidential candidates.

R.: Yes, I am a song contest advisor. We’ll have Eurovision in Ukraine next year, remember? A number of non-European countries have already applied for participation, so the event will be more like Worldvision. Of course, Ukraine must measure up as the host country. Look at Turkey after this year’s Eurovision. This country is mentioned across the world and many have discovered it for themselves. Can’t we follow suit? So long as commercial interest don’t get the upper hand, we can put together a professional team. The main thing is to make the best of this opportunity.

The Ukr.: Has the Eurovision Song Contest changed you in any way?

R.: I think it has. I’ve become more confident and restrained. I don’t remember having a fight with anyone lately, even shouting at anyone. Now I can take a philosophic view of things that would have previously made me blow my top.

The Ukr.: You and your husband are in the same line of business. It must be great. They say that such marriages are most enduring.

R.: It’s true, except that we haven’t been able to live a private life of late. It’s as though Aleksandr and I weren’t seeing each other often, although we are actually almost always together. When preparing for the song contest, he didn’t accompany us on a trip to Europe, for the sake of economy. We hadn’t been together since April. Then we had a hectic schedule in Istanbul and now I have many concert tours scheduled; ten have already been agreed upon and fifteen countries are expecting promotional tours. You see, Alex and I are a single whole, so I’ll refuse any contract if he says he doesn’t like it. He is the most important man in my life. There will be no others, just as there will be no other producers.

The Ukr.: Work is your lifestyle; that’s self-evident. Is there anything else except music?

R.: Recently I found myself collecting souvenir key rings, much to my own and others’ surprise, so I try to buy them in every country I visit. Also ballpoint pens. Perhaps because on many trips I have no time for sightseeing. I have thus been fleetingly to Barcelona, Lisbon, Croatia, and the Baltic states. These key rings and pens are my momentoes.

Cьогодні ім’я Руслани на вустах у мільйонів: нею захоплюються, про неї сперечаються, її славлять, її критикують. Байдужих немає. Бо перемога української співачки на 49-му конкурсі “Євробачення” у Стамбулі була настільки яскравою, настільки приголомшуючою, а сама Руслана так стрімко злетіла на музичний Олімп, що згадувати про її тріумф будуть ще довгі роки. Але світ довідався не тільки про самобутню, ні на кого не схожу виконавицю. Він уже запам’ятав, що є така країна - Україна. Можливо, ми й самі не до кінця усвідомлюємо, що для кожного з нас зробила ця тендітна, експресивна жінка. Можливо, це й був той самий довгоочікуваний шанс... Руслана Лижичко у нас в гостях. The Ukrainian: Руслано, коли я домовлялася про інтерв’ю з Вашим прес-секретарем і помічниками, то вразилася Вашою непосидючістю. Створилося враження, ніби Ви зайняті буквально щохвилини: концерти, зустрічі, переїзди з країни в країну. Зізнайтеся, скільки годин ви зараз спите?

Руслана Лижичко: Ох... ... Знаю-знаю, хтось скаже, що так жити не можна, але більше п’яти годин на добу спати не доводиться. Вісім - це вже розкіш, котрої я зараз собі дозволити не можу.

The Ukr.: Такий божевільний ритм - наслідок ейфорії від перемоги на “Євробаченні” або взагалі такий стиль Вашого творчого життя?

Р.Л.: Скоріше - стиль життя: мені нудно і нецікаво сидіти десь у куточку. А щодо самого слова “ейфорія”, то моя ейфорія почалася на сцені і там же закінчилася. Саме на сцені я виплеснула всі емоції, а повернувшись у гримерку, стала на подив спокійною. Навіть коли виходила за призом на сцену, всі дивувалися тому, що я абсолютно не хвилююся. Знаєте, часто людина після того, як на неї обрушується такий шквал, губиться, червоніє, блідне. У мене ж тільки одна думка: “Все, почалося”. Я ніби передбачала, що “світить” попереду, і подумала - треба бути готовою до цієї слави, до цієї популярності, до того, що пильно й пристрасно люди оцінюватимуть кожний мій крок у мистецтві й житті.

The Ukr.: А в тих, хто сидів біля екранів телевізора, навряд чи виникала думка, що артистка, котра вміє так співати й танцювати, так “заводити” публіку, може після перемоги раптом розгубитися. Ні і ще раз ні! Це міг бути хто завгодно, але не Руслана.

Р.Л.: Мій спокій мене, можна сказати, врятував. Уявляєте, коли оголосили про наше перше місце, то, спасибі Богу, мене відразу оточило кільце охоронців. Таке враження, ніби всі навколо в істериці: оператори рвуться за ексклюзивними кадрами, журналісти всіх розштовхують...Якби не охорона, то б точно хтось заїхав камерою по голові. А тут техніки кричать: “Швидше, швидше, бери мікрофон, надягайте костюми - і на вихід!” У залі здивування - повідомляють: “Юкрейн, Юкрейн”, а нас немає. А Ви кажете, ейфорія. Та в тій круговерті все як рукою зняло. Я чоловіка (продюсер співачки Олександр Ксенофонтов - Т.Г.) тільки через годину побачила, а мамині поздоровлення прийняла набагато пізніше, хоч вона весь час була зі мною в Стамбулі.

The Ukr.: Руслано, а що Ви сказали собі перед тим, як вийти на фінальний виступ?

Р.Л.: Не знаю, чи повірите, але я подумала: “Ось воно, твоє щастя. Тебе побачать стільки людей, зроби їх хоч трохи щасливішими. Нехай ще комусь стане так само весело, як тобі”. Тому й настрій був просто чудовим.

The Ukr.: А після перемоги?

Р.Л.: “Не піддавайся ажіотажу. Переможець той, хто вміє з перемогою справитися, інакше вона стане лише випадковим епізодом, а має бути трампліном. Треба встояти, не лякатися судорожно, а продовжувати далі працювати. Вибрати правильний шлях”. Ми вже вибрали: попереду концерти, запис нового диска.

The Ukr.: “Євробачення” ми дивилися таким, яким нам показали телевізійники. Можна тільки здогадуватися, що лишилося за кадром. Заведіть нас за куліси, покажіть, що ж відбувалося там з Вами?

Р.Л.: “Євробачення”, звичайно ж, не “Оскар”. Тут за кулісами не зустрінеш, умовно кажучи, Леонардо ді Капріо, не зіштовхнешся з Ричардом Гіром. Кожний бачив тільки свою “доріжку”: думав тільки про себе, готувався до свого виступу. Всі сиділи по своїх гримерках. Ми ж одного разу таки “запалили” публіку за кулісами. Почули, як через стінку розігрується турецька група. В них така запальна мелодія, схожа на наші “коломийки”, що ми не втрималися, почали вистукувати по стіні свої гуцульські ритми. А потім влетіли до них, я схопила бубон...Так веселилися, такий адреналін у крові! Ще мене весь час намагалися “посватати” за грецького співака Сакіса Руваса. Він приїхав на конкурс - таке велике цабе, мов “зірка”. Але якось так виходило, що тільки він стане перед усіма 35-ма камерами, звідки не візьмися - я влітаю, і починається регіт. Сакіса, можливо, це й дратувало, але він не подавав виду і весь час мені підігравав. От журналісти й почали стежити: ах, як він на неї подивився, ах, яким тоном вона відповіла.

The Ukr.: Тобто веселощі вирували, і навіть пошкоджена під час репетицій сцена Вас з колії не вибила?

Р.Л.: Так, там навколо нас постійно щось кублилося, просто містика якась. Почати з того, що гримерка в нас значилася під номером один. Усі проходять мимо і читають:”Юкрейн, намбер уан”. Чи не символічно, пророчо? Найвеселіші прес-конференції, як визнавали самі журналісти, проходили з нашою участю. Ми їх і на трембітах вчили грати, і пісні наші співати, і горілку салом закусувати. Таке було відчуття, ніби навколо нас усе горить, колобродить. Навіть надміцне скло сцени не витримало нашої енергії. Знаєте, чим ми займалися перед виходом у фіналі? Вальсували за кулісами під пісні попередніх виконавців. Техніки на нас страшенно сердилися: ви легковажні люди, не даєте прикріпити датчики. А нам байдуже.

The Ukr.: Можливо, Ви зі мною не погодитесь, але мені здається, що Ваша команда заздалегідь прорахувала з математичною точністю Вашу перемогу на “Євробаченні”. Російські журналісти навіть дивувалися, скільки в Стамбулі української символіки.

Р.Л.: Навіщо ж дивуватися - з собою ми привезли 500 кілограмів сувенірів. Чого там тільки не було: буклети про Україну, блокноти, ручки, футболки, бандани, подарунки журналістам. Боїнг ледь піднявся в повітря. Що стосується математичного розрахунку ... Мені здається, все-таки було більше емоцій. Коли ми збиралися на конкурс, вислухали стільки порад, що голова йшла обертом. Влітку минулого року побачив світ один із самих успішних альбомів в Україні “Дикі танці”. Безпрецедентний випадок - він став першим у країні офіційним платиновим альбомом. На сьогодні продано близько 200 тисяч дисків. Підкреслю, ліцензійних. Ми пішли трохи іншим шляхом, ніж наші попередники - Володимир Івасюк, Софія Ротару, хоча теж відштовхувалися від мелодій Карпат. Але ми взяли ритми карпатських танців, а не пісень. А гуцульські танці - бойові, войовничі, більш співзвучні сучасності. Керівник танцювальної групи “Життя” Ірина Мазур, здається, знає про танці все: вона поставила чудовий номер. А львівський дизайнер Роксолана Богуцька розбирається в найтонших нюансах гуцульського вбрання. У нас підібралася грамотна, професійна команда, без якої їхати на такий представницький форум і сенсу немає.

The Ukr.: До речі, російським журналістам Ви суворо заборонили кривдити молоденьку Юлю Савічеву, чий виступ у Стамбулі залишав бажати кращого. Причому для прикладу згадали українського співака Олександра Пономарьова, котрий на минулому конкурсі посів лише 14-е місце.

Р.Л.: Так, торік деякі журналісти буквально накинулися на Пономарьова з незаслуженою критикою. Але сьогодні можна сказати, що без Сашка, без Альони Мозгової, котрі пробили “вікно в Європу”, ми б не справилися. Вони були першими, за ними йти було набагато легше, за що ми їм дуже вдячні.

The Ukr.: Ювілейне - 50-е “Євробачення” завдяки Вам у наступному році пройде в Києві. Від чого б Ви хотіли застерегти організаторів українського конкурсу?

Р.Л.: Борони нас, Боже, від політики. Адже попереду - передвиборна президентська кампанія. Думаю, і самим політикам невигідно зв’язувати з нею моє ім’я. Авторитет лідера, котрий захоче використовувати перемогу в Стамбулі у своїх інтересах, напевно, впаде. От якби мене підтримали на початковому етапі, тоді інша справа.

The Ukr.: Однак Віктор Янукович призначив Вас своїм радником, а він один з претендентів на президентську посаду...

Р.Л.: Радником тільки по організації конкурсу. Не забувайте: в наступному році пройде найбільший конкурс, уже зараз багато неєвропейських країн висловили бажання взяти в ньому участь. Це буде вже “Світобачення”. Тому дуже б хотілося, щоб Україна змогла гідно презентувати себе. Дивіться, як у турків пішов процес після конкурсу, - про них заговорили у світі, про них багато хто довідався. Невже в нас не вийде? Тільки б не домінували комерційні інтереси, а команду професіоналів зібрати можна. Головне, зуміти скористатися тим шансом, що з’явився в країни.

The Ukr.: Руслано, а Вас саму “Євробачення” у чомусь змінило?

Р.Л.: Так, напевно. Я стала якось спокійнішою, витриманішою. Не пам’ятаю, коли останнім часом з кимось сварилася, на когось підвищила голос. По-філософськи дивлюся на те, що раніше викликало бурю емоцій.

The Ukr.: Напевно, це чудово, що у Вас спільна справа з чоловіком. Кажуть, такі шлюби найміцніші.

Р.Л.: Правда, тільки останнім часом ніякого особистого життя не виходить. Таке відчуття, що ми із Сашком не бачимося, хоча майже весь час поруч. Коли готувалися до конкурсу, в подорожі з концертами по Європі чоловік (з метою економії) нас не супроводжував. Практично, з початку квітня ми не опинялися наодинці. У Стамбулі теж були нарозхват, а зараз у мене попереду багато гастролей: 10 країн уже замовили турне, мінімум у 15-ти чекають із промо-візитом. Але, розумієте, ми із Сашком - єдине ціле. Я можу відмовитися від будь-якого контракту, якщо чоловік його не схвалить. Він найголовніша людина в моєму житті. Жодних інших не буде. Як не буде інших продюсерів.

The Ukr.: Гадаю, усім вже зрозуміло, що робота у Вас - це спосіб життя. Чи є що-небудь, крім музики?

Р.Л.: Недавно раптом, на подив собі й близьким, почала збирати брелоки. З усіх країн, де буваю, намагаюся їх привезти. А ще ручки. Це, напевно, тому, що в багатьох поїздках мені нічого докладно не вдається подивитися. Мимо “пролетіли” Барселона, Лісабон, Хорватія, Прибалтика. Так хоч якась пам’ять про ці країни залишиться.
