The Hunting Season

The hunting season in Ukraine begins in mid-August. That is when you can go to the country with your shotgun, if you want, and shoot something. The political season kicks off a little later, on September 7, when Verkhovna Rada reconvenes after the summer recess. The electoral hunting season for votes began on July 4 and has not stopped in spite of the vacation season. 26 presidential candidates (twice as many as in the presidential elections of 1999) have joined the greatest hunt of all - the Presidency.

Pawnbrokers Are Likely to Do Hot Business Come Autumn

If you need a couple of millions to launch a business, you turn to a bank for a loan. If you are broke and there are still a few days to go before you receive your paycheque you turn to friends to help you out. But if there’s no one to borrow money from, you go to a pawnbroker. There are quite of few them in Ukraine - about a thousand, or as a popular Ukrainian saying goes, there are as many of them as there are fleas on a dog. Their size and scale of business vary - from small hockshops with a statutory capital of 15 hryvnyas to almost loan banks with as much as 10 million hryvnyas of statutory capital. Big pawnbrokers operate like banks, advancing loans to customers who pledge a consignment of goods as security on the loans; on the other hand, there are small pawnbrokers that simply trade stolen goods. But all of them have one important feature in Ukraine that unites them - they are all illegal in the sense that there is no law that regulates their activities.

They Are Not Afraid Of The Geni In The Capital Of Democracy

I sank back into the big “armchair of wishes,” rested my hands on the marble armrests, made myself comfortable and closed my eyes. If you can focus your mind on one wish, it is supposed to come true. I tried really hard but could not concentrate. My mind flicked from one thing to another, which really did not need the magic of the chair of wishes. No matter how hard I tried, nothing worthwhile came into my head. Suddenly I heard an annoyed male’s voice, “Come on you’ve been sitting there far too long!”

Мисливський сезон

У середині серпня в Україні почався мисливський сезон. Можна взяти рушницю, виїхати на природу і почати полювати на будь-яку пернату живність. Політичний сезон має стартувати 7 вересня. Цього дня депутати зберуться на перше постканікулярне засідання Верховної Ради. А електоральний сезон “полювання” за голосами виборців почався 4 липня і продовжується, незважаючи на відпускний період. 26 кандидатів у президенти (рівно вдвічі більше, ніж на виборах 1999 року) намагаються здобути головний “мисливський трофей” - посаду глави держави.

Про наближення енергетичної кризи говорять уже понад 50 років. Нині ціни на нафту значно підскочили, однак попит на неї, незважаючи на це, лишається високим. Ломбардна осінь буде спекотною

Коли не вистачає кількох мільйонів - йдуть за кредитом до банку. Коли треба дотягти до зарплати, а позичити 100 грн нема в кого, - звертаються до ломбардів. Останніх в Україні, як бліх на собаці, - близько тисячі. Та й масштаби діяльності різні. Є “позичкові будинки” зі статутним капіталом в 15 грн (!), є - із десятьма мільйонами. Одні працюють майже нарівні з банками, кредитуючи підприємців під заставу товарних партій, інші просто скуповують вкрадені речі. Всіх єднає одне - вони поки що знаходяться поза законом.

У “столиці демократії” джина не бояться

Я сіла в масивне “крісло бажань”, зручно примостила руки на кам’яне поруччя, заплющила очі і ... За ідеєю, слід було терміново загадати бажання, і воно обов’язково мало здійснитися. Але в голову чогось нічого путнього не приходило, а всяку дрібноту можна й без крісла вирішити. Поки я гарячково міркувала, що б таке особливе придумати, пролунав невдоволений чоловічий голос: “ Скільки ж ви будете ще сидіти?” Поруч із кріслом уже виросла невелика черга: кожний мучився із своїм бажанням і вірив - воно неодмінно збудеться...
