The Presidential New Year
The President of Ukraine traditionally addresses the nation on December 31, just before midnight marking the New Year. Although many believe that this time the New Year greetings will be delivered by Viktor Yushchenko, no-one is absolutely sure. No other election campaigns in Ukraine have been marked by such extreme political conditions. Yushchenko’s supporters held a non-stop rally on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) for several weeks, protesting the election fraud of November 21. The event became known as the Orange Revolution, the colour favoured by the opposition leader’s fans.

I hope I can ask a future President of Ukraine, “When your hand was on the Holy Bible and you were about to be sworn in, what were you thinking? Maybe of those freezing nights in a cramped tent, when your fingers ached with the cold and you thought that your ears would fall off like two flat icicles? Those hard rock concerts in the Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) and thousands of voices chanting? Or maybe the eyes of an old woman bringing a bucketful of boiled potatoes to Khreshchatyk, saying, ‘It’s for you, boys, help yourselves, you’ve got to stay strong.’ Or a youthful lady in an expensive fur coat, sporting a coquettish orange bow and shouting: ‘Anyone wants a shower? Three at a time, please come with me!’” What will this future president remember about that distant November 2004?

Cherry Trees Will Blossom Come Spring No Matter What
I wanted to get to know Uzhgorod better than just a casual visitor. I wanted to get the feel of the place. When I ventured out for a walk on a crispy cold morning, I took along with me a plastic cup of steaming, very strong black coffee. I chose the promenade along the waterfront for my first walk. The layer of thin ice on the ground in many places made walking a somewhat hazardous exercise, but I walked bravely on, sipping my coffee and enjoying the touch of cold air on my cheeks. It was a leisurely stroll, a far cry from my usual rushing around in Kyiv. The walk, the coffee and the crispy air put me in a buoyant mood. Holding firmly on to the plastic cup as I crossed the slippery places, I kept looking around and taking in what I saw. I was thinking that walking has a great advantage over travelling in a car if you want to really get the feel of things around you.

Wonders of the World
Whenever we see these words we generally think of the seven wonders of the world which were famous man made items of which unfortunately only one remains, the pyramids of Egypt. However, the famous naturalist reporter from BBC Mr. David Attenborough has his own list of the wonders of the world and his list is made up of the natural wonders of the world. So for his television programme he took us for a world wide tour of these wonders. So for itinerate travellers who read our magazine we decided to feature these wonders so perhaps you could draw up a hit list when planning your overseas holidays as an alternative to famous cities and man made monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China or the Tower Bridge. Можливо, обпалююче-холодні ночі в тісному наметі, те, як стигли пальці, а вуха, здавалося, от-от відваляться від морозу? Шалений рок на Майдані, силу тисяч глоток, які скандують? Або очі жінки похилого віку, яка принесла на Хрещатик ціле цебро звареної картоплі та все примовляла: “Їжте, хлопці, набирайтеся сил”. Чи моложаву даму в дорогій шубці з кокетливо пришпиленим жовтогарячим бантиком, котра голосно запрошувала: “Хто хоче в душ? Три особи за мною!” Що згадаєте Ви, мій майбутній Президенте, про листопад 2004 року?

Сакура зацвіте й наступної весни
Щоб відчути себе справжньою жителькою Ужгорода, я затисла в руці маленький пластиковий стаканчик з найміцнішою кавою і відправилася на прогулянку по набережній. Хоча ноги сковзали по нечищеному тротуару, легкий морозець пощипував щоки, кожний ковток гарячого напою народжував у душі безпричинну радість і вселяв незвичайну легкість. Оберігаючи тендітний стаканчик, який так і норовив вислизнути з пальців, я змінила київський біг підтюпцем на статечний крок, і те, що раніше проносилося повз увагу, раптом стало опукло чітким.
